12/08/13 I always thought snow can make anything look better. Everyday, I walk past piles of trash and used to think that there is no aesthetic value to it. I mean, it’s trash. Yet at the same time, there are thousands of artists who incorporate trash in their work. People can throw away anything: old food, glass bottles, plastic wrappers. People also throw bigger things away: families, time, lives. I’ve thrown away tens of thousands of pictures, writers constantly throw away words, artists often throw out sketches. But we’re never really throwing it all away. It always leads to something. Writers may throw away words but it in turn changes how they see what they write; artists throw out sketches but that inspires new ones; I take many pictures that I don’t consider to be “good” before I come to one I like. Snow has the natural ability to change the way things, trash included, looks. Maybe thats why winter comes when it does. With this new fallen snow, we should change the way we look at 2013. Cover the ugliness, hardships, and obstacles and look at what made it a good year; change the way we thought of it to a more positive image. Walking around today, I saw some of the prettiest trash I’ve ever seen.
10/06/13 This magical event happened post-toilet-flood-number-3. If you look to the lower lefthand corner, you’ll notice a toilet flood leaking down into the third floor from the fifth. This flood is the third of a currently four part flood series. Also, those are my hallmates. But damn, that flood.
11/05/13 I made the switch from the brick flip phone (her name was Cassidy) to the smartphone this year. Whenever someone posts on my wall, I get a notification and I don’t like that. Can’t explain it. So my birthday was 11/04/94 and I went out of my way to hide it on Facebook. I even deleted friends just so that I wouldn’t have to get notifications. Somehow it leaked and I have the following text conversation with fellow Chattanoogan/NYU scholar, Sophie (http://sophi3e.tumblr.com/):
SHAWN WHAT THE FUCK ITS YOUR BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOOOOD also im going to need to know your favorite type of cake AND I KNOW ALL FOOD TASTES THE SAME TO YOUR BUT I NEEDS A DEFINITE ANSWER BECAUSE THEY DONT MAKE AN EVERYTHING CAKE ONLY EVERYTHING BAGELS AND THOSE ARE NOT APPROPRIATELY FESTIVE
